NPP Net Primary Productivity
The Net primary productivity of the northern coniferous forest, also known as the Boreal or Taiga forest, is at an average of 3,400 kal/m2/yr. This puts the Boreal forest at the higher end of the net primary productivity when compared to other terrestrial ecosystems. Is is closest above the NPP of the Savanna and Agricultural land but less than Swamps and Marshes, Tropical rain forests, and temperate forests.
GPP Gross Primary Production
The Gross primary production is the rate in which an ecosystem's producers convert solar energy into chemical energy as biomass found in their tissues. The gross primary production rate is subtracted by the rate if respiration to equal the net primary productivity. Therefore, since the Boreal forest has a high net primary productivity it means the gross primary production rate is high, with a lower respiration rate in comparison to other locations.
